How does my garden grow?

Typically it doesn't. We live rural and I can grow livestock and I can grow children, but apparently I can't grow a vegetable to save my life .... or my children's, for that matter, if it came down to that.

Every year I have attempted to grow a garden, with horrible success. This year I'm trying something different. So a couple weeks ago I went to an event with several ladies from church that offered different little "lectures" or "workshops". One of those was on creating your own grow box.

It was really easy, especially when all the pvc is already cut for you and as far as I'm concerned, anything that requires the use of power tools is my sorta fun. So we made these out of Rubbermaid containers,  pvc pipe and zip ties .... can't forget the zip ties. The pvc pile on the bottom is for support of the dirt on top as well as allowing the water to wick up and get to the seeds/plants.

Supposedly grow boxes are supposed to grow, whatever it is that you are growing, faster and better.  I'm pretty sure that I will be a good test of that. If I can grow it .... well .... anyone can.

So today, after over a week of having sick flu kiddos in my house, I decided I needed to get outside and get some fresh air. I decided to assemble my box.

As usual, I had helpers.

As usual, I had many more than I really needed.

A helping hand from my favorite helper, while he was up to it.

And our finished product.

The white pipe is what you use to fill the water in the bottom of the container.

The two things that are my biggest downfall where gardening is concerned are that I forget to water (with this box you only have to water about once every few days though) and my chickens destroy everything I try to grow. I am going to put something around the box once the seeds start to sprout to keep the chickens out.

I'll keep you posted on the progress.

Because we all like a good deal ...

I wanted to share something with you all.  With the ever increasing food prices that we are all experiencing I wanted to share a good find with you.  Today was the second time that I ordered from this company, both times with very pleasing results.

It's a company called Zaycon Foods. They are a company based in Utah. It was started by a man who is a Butcher who wanted to pass along a better price and quality of food to folks like you and me.

How it works is, you go to their website (link posted up there) and register. When they are having an "event", as they call them, in your state they will e-mail you with the information. It's one food item at a time. I picked up 80# of chicken breast today. Extremely LARGE chicken breast that is 100 % natural with no added hormones, additives or artificial ingredients. I asked the delivery man today when they will be doing ground beef and he said April.

So you get the email of the upcoming event (it's usually about 3 weeks before delivery), you place your order, pay for it and then pick it up on pick up day at the location nearest to you. There are a lot of locations in each state so check to see if there is one near you.

The price I paid per pound for the chicken I got was approx. 30 cents a pound cheaper than I can get it  locally. So if you have the freezer space stock up.  We have a lot of freezer space. I have 2 refrigerators and one large stand up freezer so I am able to get 80# of chicken and have the room for it. Even if you don't have a lot of freezer space, go in on an order with a friend or neighbor. The chicken comes 40# per box, so you have to order at least 40#'s.

I love a deal and I love sharing them with you all as well.  I also have no clue why this post is highlighted half way through.
